In fact, records have it that German universities are among the best in the world in terms of providing quality education including the study of medicine and related medical courses.

Studying Medicine in Germany

First off, there is much competition among international students desiring to study medicine or related medical courses in Germany. Usually, studying medicine takes roughly six years and three months to complete for a regular degree course. This course is completed by a state Examination after which, the students obtain licenses to practice as physicians.

There are 43 Universities in which you can study medicine in Germany, only four of them are private, the remaining 39 universities are public. The public universities in Germany do not require tuition (tuition-free), except Baden-Württemberg University which charges 1,500 € per semester for non-European students only.

Can I Study Medicine in Germany in English?

To study Medicine in Germany, you must have excellent German speaking skills. This is because the courses are taught in the German language, also, you will require German to communicate with patients. Excellent language skills on a C1 level are needed to get admitted into the study program although some universities will admit students who speak German on a B2 level. Another thing to consider is the final state examination which will be offered in German.

Although the degree for the Medicine state examination is offered in German, other formats exist that are integrated into the bachelor’s and master’s system that includes studies in English in medical-related courses. Although these are not part of the curriculum that will make you a practicing physician, they can give you great insights into the field and can be a great addition to your studies as a medical student abroad.

Costs of Studying Medicine in Germany for Foreigners

As stated before, most programs or courses offered in German public universities are tuition-free for both international and German students. The only cost they will have to cover is the semester contribution done twice a year which could be about 200 – 300 € per semester depending on the university.

International students can study medicine for free in Germany except in two different situations.

  • International students outside Europe who want to study at any university in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.
  • Students who want to study at any of the four private Universities that offer medical studies in Germany.
